Earning a Million vs. Becoming a Millionaire
Many people search "how much do I need to make to be a millionaire", but income and wealth are different things. A millionaire is normally someone whose net worth (everything owned minus everything owed) is at least $1 million. A salary of $1 million a year is extremely rare; a net worth of $1 million is reachable on an ordinary income over a few decades if part of it is invested.
For example, investing $1,000 a month at an average 7% annual return reaches $1 million in roughly 27.5 years, and at 10% in roughly 22.5 years. The millionaire-by-age calculator shows how much you would need to invest each month for your own timeline, and the salary to millionaire calculator works from your salary and savings rate.
Why Take-Home Pay Is Much Lower
All numbers on this page are before tax. At very high incomes, a large share goes to federal income tax (the top U.S. bracket is 37%), state income tax where it applies, and payroll taxes such as the 1.45% Medicare tax plus the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on wages above $200,000 (single filers). The exact amount depends on where you live, your filing status and how the income is earned, so use a tax calculator or a tax professional for after-tax figures.
This calculator divides income evenly across the year. Real pay from businesses, commissions or investments is often uneven, and some of it is taxed differently.
